Tom McNickle
A native of Western Pennsylvania, McNickle paints country houses, woodlands, the open countryside, and most recently, Charleston and the South Carolina Lowcountry. Favoring a long, narrow format that is particularly suited to depicting the flat expanse of the land, his small paintings are done on location but his large watercolors are made in the studio from sketches, memory, and an occasional photograph. Although some of his paintings are very large (measuring up to 45” x 60”) and contain complex foliage and architectural detail, he works so rapidly that he completes them in one sitting. The idea of rapid execution is an essential element of the philosophy of Zen, and is an integral part of his work. Approaching each painting in a meditative state, McNickle captures the essence of the lowcountry by layering direct, spontaneous strokes of color. Tom McNickle studied at Edinboro State University in Pennsylvania. He has exhibited in numerous solo shows at such places as the Jerald Melberg Gallery in Charlotte, the Butler Institute of Art in Youngstown, Ohio, and Capricorn Gallery in Bethesda, Maryland. His work can be found in numerous public and private collections including the Butler Institute of American Art, Vero Beach Center for the Arts, Bank of America, and US Airways. He is a member of the American Watercolor Society and the National Watercolor Society.
