John Bennett
First published in the Yearbook of the Poetry Society of South Carolina, 1925,and in Martha Severens' book on the Charleston Renaissance. John Bennett did all the artwork in the Yearbook of the Society.
In this yearbook, Bennett says " The harshly-bitten etching which forms our frontispiece was done on a summer's afternoon, with a sail-maker's needle, a bottle of acquafortis, a goosewing, a friendly back porch, plus advice, from six, and with a youngster reading poetry aloud while the acrid acid gnawed: The House of the Doctor to the Dead, by John Bennett; exhibited by the Etchers' Club, at its annual print-exhibit."
Bennet was born in 1865 and according to his biographer Harlan Greene, was one of the leading figures in the Charleston Renaissance. He was acquainted with some of the most fascinating residents of and visitors to Charleston of the time, including DuBose Heyward and Alfred Hutty. John Bennet died in 1956.
