Elizabeth Nottingham
Elizabeth Nottingham Day, born 1907 in Salisbury, NC began painting as a young child. Nottingham, known primarily for her landscape paintings, painted from life and in the outdoors. After graduating from Randolph-Macon College, she enrolled in the Art Students League from 1928-1931, where she was awarded a fellowship for travel and study in Europe. After marrying Horace T. Day, she taught at Mary Baldwin College in VA, where she remained until her death in 1956. Nottingham, who was included in Art in America’s Annual Listing of New Talent (1956), exhibited in The Corcoran Gallery of Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Rockefeller Center and The Gibbes Art Gallery. Her work is held by The Virginia Museum of Fine Art, Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, Mary Baldwin College and New Britain Museum of American Art, as well as corporate and private collections.
